William Duer (1747-1799) arrived in New York in 1767, settling on a tract of land north of Saratoga. Members of the Duer family include William Alexander, Lord Stirling (1726-1783), Revolutionary General; William Duer, 1747-1799, Revolutionary patriot; and William Alexander Duer (1780-1858), jurist and president of Columbia College from 1829 until 1842. Alice Duer Miller (1874-1942) graduated from Barnard College in 1899 with a degree in mathematics. In 1922 she became a Barnard trustee. Caroline King Duer (b. 1865) was her sister, and Elizabeth Meads Duer was their mother.
