Love makes the world go around
30-year-old Moe Bowstern hand- and typewrites this account of her year beach seining (dragnet fishing) after eight years of working on boats. She notes differences in attitude from the grueling work on boats during salmon season to the much calmer beach seining process. She documents the history of seining in Kodiak, Alaska, and briefly touches on the Native American history before discussing commercial canneries and their effect on the local economy and fish populations. She relates several bear stories, talks about "greenhorns" (newcomers), and laments changes that take place as white people to exploit the land. She also includes contributions from guest authors who write about the dismal outlook of commercial fishing and fish farming and their impacts on the environment. The zine contains illustrations, art, photographs, recipes, book reviews and a glossary.
